🪅 Heap Heap Hurray Ed. #45

Daily dispatches from the world of technology.

Happy Monday! Hope you start the week feeling fresh and energised!

🤫 Geek Goss 🤭

#MillionDollarMistake - Rabbit R1, a device that uses GenAI to be your assistant and last evaluated at $150 million, was found to have hard coded their API Keys. Clearly better sense does not prevail even in the most pricey startups

#CrawlerShaming - Did you hear about Perplexity AI? They're getting investigated by Amazon for allegedly scraping websites without permission! And, they're denying it all, saying their bot respects robots.txt. But, Wired found evidence of them ignoring those rules. Talk about entitlement.

#ThreadsOrWhee - New Logo For Threads? No. Wait A Minute - That’s The Logo For TikTok’s Whee App. Eerily similar to that of Threads. Lawsuit incoming?

#TeamViewerHacked - TeamViewer says their systems were hacked by Russia, although they claim that the incident was restricted to non production systems

#AllOfYoursIsMine - Microsoft’s AI CEO made a controversial claim that if something is publicly available, then it becomes “freeware” that anyone can freely copy and use.

#InfiniteReboot - Microsoft pauses Windows 11 update as it’s sending some PCs into an infinite reboot hell. We are not making this up! Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

⌛ The Past 24 hours

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced tests for creator-made AI chatbots on Instagram via Meta AI Studio, starting in the U.S. Initially, around 50 creators will participate, with a broader rollout planned by August. The AI avatars will be clearly marked and primarily appear in messaging.

In response to upcoming EU legislation, Apple is reportedly developing "electrically induced adhesive debonding" to simplify iPhone battery replacements. This method uses metal casings and a small electric jolt to dislodge batteries. While Apple recommends professional replacements, this tech could debut in the iPhone 16 and expand to all iPhone 17 models.

Achieving 100% code coverage doesn't guarantee bug-free software. An example with a single line of code demonstrates that even with perfect coverage, a divide-by-zero error was missed, causing a critical failure. Code coverage should not be the sole metric for software quality.

Microfeatures like sidenotes, tables of contents, progress bars, easily linkable headings, and dialogues can significantly improve user experience on your blog. These small, low-overhead additions enhance navigation and readability, making your content more engaging and accessible.

Key skills often overlooked include accepting minor hassles, accurately assessing desires versus reality, interacting respectfully with dissenting views, engaging in meaningful conversations with diverse individuals, being concise, diplomatically saying "no," and respecting the role of luck and risk in outcomes.
