#Perplexed - Perplexity, the AI startup backed by Jeff Bezos, is playing dirty by ignoring the Robots Exclusion Protocol to scrape website data. Despite claiming to respect the rules, it's sneaking around like a rebellious teenager, using unlisted IPs to grab content. They're in hot water not just for this but also for allegedly ripping off Forbes' work without proper credit. Imagine thinking you can bend the internet rules just because you have Bezos backing you up! Forbes isn't having it, and neither is the rest of the digital media world. Drama much?

⌛ The Past 24 hours

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) signed two bills into law on Thursday that aim to protect kids and teens from social media harms. One of the bills, the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation for Kids Act, will require parental consent for social media companies to use ‘addictive feeds’. The legislation will also limit social media notifications to teens’ phones overnight.

Some YouTube Premium subscribers have had their membership randomly cancelled. The common thread appears to be that the users used a VPN to subscribe to YouTube Premium at a cheaper rate than what is available for their home market. Google has commented that it is cracking down on this practice while avoiding discussing the forced cancelations.

Biden administration to ban Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus software. Ban will prohibit downloads, resales, and licensing of the antivirusSoftware. Ban is culmination of two-year probe into Kasperski by the Department of Commerce. Citing national security concerns, the administration is expected to prohibit the sale of Kaspersky Lab’s software in the US.

Instagram now allows users to livestream exclusively to their Close Friends list, enhancing privacy and control over broadcasts. This feature aims to attract users who prefer private, real-time interactions, marking a shift towards more curated connections on the platform.
