Daily dispatches from the world of technology.

A very good Thursday morning to you! Let's accomplish something remarkable today.

You don’t need to have a 100-person company to develop that idea.

#NotYourUsualAIUseCase - We all know how stressful call center jobs can be. If it isn’t about meeting deadlines and targets, customers come in various forms and being constantly yelled at by them, for no fault of the employee, is far too common a story. Well guess what - SoftBank has found a very unique case for AI - to turn the audio of incoming angry customers throwing tantrums into soothing, calmer tones. Very positive use of AI if you ask us.

#LikeMeNot - X (Twitter) is hiding your “like” activity. Now you can like all those "guilty pleasures" without your “followers” or your stalker judging you. Perfect timing too, with all that new adult content coming in. Like away, no one’s watching!

#FalseAccusations - First we had regular software. Then we had AI based software. Now we have software to detect if something else was generated using AI. And it seems like these are not very accurate, yet, dangerously, being relied upon by many. An example - Writers are getting canned because AI detectors can't tell a chatbot from a human. Imagine 24 years in journalism, and boom—labelled a fraud by a glitch-y tool. These detectors are like paranoid bosses, firing you for being too perfect.

⌛ The Past 24 hours

Elon Musk had sued OpenAI last month - for claiming that they intended to be Open about their IP, but they are now guarding it and making it closed source. He was quickly proved wrong when OpenAI made public the emails that they sent him and his acknowledgement of it - stating that as they get closer to ChatGPT, they will have to go closed source.

Apparently, Google has managed to train AI to detect when your phone is getting stolen - certain movements, unknown Wifi network are some of the parameters it is using to determine this. And this feature is now being rolled out.

Now that the dust is settling, we now have more details about features that didn’t get the grand welcome at the Apple’s event a day earlier, but are not to be missed.

Brazil's government has enlisted OpenAI's services to streamline lawsuit screenings, aiming to cut down on rising court-related expenses. Using AI via Microsoft's Azure platform, the initiative will assist in identifying actionable cases early, thus potentially saving significant costs.

Getting a 100 on Google Lighthouse is the benchmark front end developers strive for. However, these scores can be manipulated to appear higher by focusing on specific performance metrics such as Total Blocking Time, Largest Contentful Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift. Suffice to say, these hacks don't equate to real-world performance, as Lighthouse is only a rough guide.
