Daily dispatches from the world of technology.
Thursday energy is here - let's make the most of it!
We should have known - twas the day of Christmas and we had to make do with limited gossip and news, making today’s edition perhaps the shortest ever.
Geek Gossip
#InternetIsNotAlwaysHelpful - This developer posted a genuine question about their career prospects in Indigo, India’s airline company - only to be hilariously bombarded with bug reports and feature requests for their ticketing portal! The original post is now deleted, but the comments are still around making it for a fun read.

Russia Imposes 6-year Ban On Crypto Mining In 10 Regions
Russia just banned crypto mining in 10 regions for 6 years due to its extremely high power consumption. This ban affects an industry that was only fully legalized in Russia in November. Russia has had a complicated history with crypto, having banned its use as legal tender in 2022, but still allowing cross-border payments as a way to avoid sanctions. This move follows similar actions from other countries like Kosovo and Angola.

Time Management For Impact
Jesston's blog discusses productivity using the Important vs Urgent matrix. Software developers often prioritize urgent tasks, but Jesston argues that focusing on important, non-urgent tasks can lead to more impact and happiness.
When To Push Your Colleagues
Knowing when to motivate team members towards progress and when to respect their autonomy is crucial. Learn to identify opportunities to "push" others, but also recognize when to hold back. Understand individual strengths, weaknesses, and motivations through relationship-building and trust. Timing is key to avoid frustration, failure, and lost confidence.
Effective Alerting Strategy
Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and tailored instrumentation are key to reducing noise and focusing on actionable signals. Non-actionable alerts lead to alert fatigue, conditioning teams to ignore signals, as seen in the "normalization of deviance" phenomenon.
